Urine is not sterile. This was only discovered in 2014 and we have a lot of catching up to do.
Scientists still don’t know a lot about the female urinary microbiome or why some women get urinary tract infections (UTIs) while others don’t. We’re looking to change that and improve the lives of millions of women.
UTI affects around 404 million people globally every year (85% in females), and is one of the biggest contributors to the antimicrobial resistance crisis.
The Bladder Biome Project aims to improve the understanding of recurrent UTI, with the ultimate goal of helping to change the ways in which recurrent UTI is diagnosed and treated.
How can you help us close the research gender gap?
We’re calling on female entrepreneurs to activate their networks to help us reach those who could benefit from this research. US mainland based people with female urinary anatomy who experience recurrent UTI are welcome to apply to join the study.
